Culture-Based Assays

The cell is the smallest structural and functional unit of an organism. Quantification of a specific biological response at a cellular level under physiological and pathological conditions generates insight that may otherwise be difficult to gauge when studying that response in isolation. Illustrative of this is the quantification of IFN-γ by ELISpot following the ex vivo culture and stimulation of PBMCs with a recall antigen (e.g. vaccine) versus measuring serum levels of IFN-γ.
